‘In the set of works titled Synthetic Nature, Vasudha Kapadia explores the world of artificial intelligence, specifically the term CAPTCHA, a contrived acronym based on the word ‘capture’, which was coined in 2003, to describe a test used computing to ascertain whether a user is human.
The criteria of a CAPTCHA test is to be simple enough that any human can solve it without being so simple that it can
be solved by Artificial Intelligence. Initially, text was used as computers weren’t skilled at reading distorted text.
However, with technological advancements, humans can now teach machines to recognise images.’
Text by Mario Ashley D’souza for Kochi Muziris Biennale.

Synthetic Nature consists of 44 small scale drawings that interpret what a ‘landscape’ can be, in an effort to redefine
the meaning of the term. The drawings utilise the tile format familiar to CAPTCHA tests, compelling the viewer to select
the images containing landscapes. Playing on the idea of meaning-making and highlighting the absurd nature of the
tests, I present images that are intentionally confusing and which defy simple categorisation.
